Tweets are and have always been publicly viewable one reason Facebook recently changed its default for status updates to "public". Still, some users may not expect their tweets to show up on Google and Bing next to ads relating to their content.

On the upside, Google and Bing users will be able to tap into Twitter's collective consciousness by searching and tracking trends as they're made as a new way to keep up with events. On the downside, for some, they could amplify hastily-written tweets well beyond one's circle of followers.

Both are investing millions of dollars into cloud computing solutions. And both recognize the growing importance of the Internet for the average consumer. Google may have an advantage over Microsoft because it's a Web-based company; however, Microsoft has decades of experience in application development and consumer research. Let's look at some of the strengths and weaknesses of each company. Though Mozilla's Firefox still maintains the impressive share it gained in the Web browser space over the last few years, Microsoft Internet Explorer still accounts for a little more than 60 percent of the browser market share [source: Net Applications ].

Google's Chrome Web browser is still comparatively new to the scene, but its impressive speed and usability have quickly pushed it to third place with a 7 percent share.

The Chrome browser is just one player in a larger open-source Chromium OS project launched in , aimed at streamlining a computer's entire OS to be no more than a fast-booting portal to Web-based resources. It's too early to tell whether Chrome OS will be a significant threat to Microsoft Windows, but Google is focusing a chunk of its marketing on Windows' shortcomings in security.
