Arie ,. Turn off alerts. Bmoore ,. I think Arie already posted that didn't he? Create it. How about just turning off the balloon tips?
They're kind of a pain anyway. If you want to do this, look at this page for instructions. Customize the Notification Area If you do this, the balloon tips will be turned off for everything. Zander ,. For some of us, those balloons are a pain and always seem to paste themselves right where I need to look. It can't be dismissed. You get two choices-- Restart Now, or Restart Later. If you click Restart Later, it pops up again ten minutes later, like clockwork. It belongs to wuauclt. I tried killing wuauclt. I want automatic updates, but I also want to restart my computer when I feel like it. I got infected with the XP Security hijacker which is essentially just like the version, which I've also gotten at least twice before and successfully cleaned without problem coming in over IE8 from a site I've been to thousands of times, and got it cleaned out to my knowledge thanks to MSE combined with Spybot and Malaware free versions which work just fine with MSE as supplements to it.
However, now my Security Center reports my Automatic update is turned off, little red shield with X in it down in the taskbar. I've tried turning it on with the directions given by the Security Center, but no go -- the Automatic Updates pop-up screen reports that everything is set properly to Auto Update everyday at pm when I generally have the computer on, but I still have said little red shield with X on it in the taskbar. MSE is all green and go in both open and taskbar modes, while the Security Center reports that my Firewall is green and working, and so is Virus Protection.
I suspect that the infection was not completely removed or caused some damage while it was there though Malwarebytes should do the trick. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.
Look in the System section.
